Virtual Centre for Industrial Process Tomography (VCIPT)

The primary aim of the VCIPT is to advance the field of industrial process tomography to best meet the long-term needs of its participants.

This new technology allows chemical process manufacturers, for example, to estimate the spatial distribution of phases and chemicals inside their processing vessels or pipelines. Striking augmented-reality 3-D images can be reconstructed from non-invasive peripheral sensing.

To deliver on this aim, the VCIPT integrates a wide range of research skills (including computing, electronics, mathematics, physics, process engineering and particle science).

These are interfaced with process users from sectors as diverse as food, minerals, pharmaceuticals and petrochemicals.

The Centre consists of a team of academics from Leeds University and The University of Manchester together with industrial member companies. It was initially established in 1996 with funding from the UK Government's Foresight Challenge Projects and industrial consortium members. Their website contains information about the VCIPT, the industrial consortium members and the various activities currently underway.

The VCIPT's operational objectives are to:

* manage pre-competitive research between academics and industry
* transfer technology to apply research
* ensure continuity of world-leading research in on-line sensors
* raise awareness of industrial process tomography potential
* maintain funding for a visible international presence and critical mass of expertise
* foster international linkages

The InstMC

The Institute of Measurement & Control (The InstMC)- Britains foremost professional body for the Automation Industry - provides members with routes to Engineering Council registration as Chartered and Incorporated Engineers, and Engineering Technicians.

Roles & Objectives

New and Old

The science of measurement is very old and has advanced steadily in the precision with which measurements may be made and by a variety and sophistication of the methods available. Since the early 20th century the rate of advance has been very rapid, in particular stimulated by the needs of industry. Control engineering has a much more recent origin; with the advent of the complex requirements, such as those of the process and aerospace industries, there has been a veritable explosion of new theory and application during the last 50 years. In this period there has been a correspondingly rapid increase in the number of people working in these fields.

Multi-disciplinary

The theory and application of measurement and control characteristically require a multi-disciplinary approach and so do not fit into any of the single disciplinary professional institutes.

Bringing People Together

The Institute brings together thinkers and practitioners from the many disciplines which have a common interest in measurement and control. It organises meetings, seminars, exhibitions, and national and international conferences on a large number of topics. It has a very strong level of local section activity, providing opportunities for interchange of experience and for introducing advances in theory and application.

Qualifying Role

It provides qualifications in a rapidly growing profession and is one of the few Chartered Engineering institutions which has long welcomed and qualified Incorporated Engineers and Engineering Technicians as well as Chartered Engineers.

Information

In its member journal, Measurement and Control, the Institute publishes practical technical articles, product and business news and information on technical advances; in the newsletter, Interface, the activities of the Institute, its members and the engineering profession in general are reported.

In addition the Institute provides a whole range of learned and other publications which are described later in this section.

Royal Charter

The objects of the Institute, expressed in the Royal Charter, are:

To promote for the public benefit, by all available means, the general advancement of the science and practice of measurement and control technology and its application.

To further its objects the Institute acts as a qualifying body, conferring membership only on those whose qualifications comply with the Institute’s standards. It acts as a Learned Society by disseminating and advancing the knowledge of measurement and control and its application at all levels. It is the academic and professional body for the profession, requiring members to observe a code of conduct

The InstMC is uniquely dedicated to measurement, automation, instrumentation and control; the topic is not simply an added extra, it i's the heart, the driving force, the purpose.

The InstMC is not tied to a single industrial application area nor it is limited in the technologies and disciplines it may embrace in the furtherance of measurement and control. Any application or technique of measurement and control is properly the province of the InstMC.

The breadth, flexibility, versatility of the InstMC and its technology are seen reflected in the wide range of qualifications the Institute imparts to its members.

NAPT - National Association for Proficiency Testing

NAPT is a non-profit membership association dedicated to the improvement of measurement quality. NAPT was officially founded in December of 1996 when it was clear there was a need for an association dedicated to effective proficiency testing because of newly implemented standards set by the metrology community for accreditation standards both nationally and internationally. Although there were many types of comparison programs being conducted across the world just a few allowed participation from the metrology community in an open format.

Round robins have been ably conducted by organizations such as NIST and NCSL, but this function was not institutionalized until NAPT's formation.

NAPT is the first standing organization dedicated exclusively to providing ILC/PTs. NAPT fills a gap in the U.S. accreditation and verification infrastructure. NAPT will not only provide verification of lab proficiency for the U.S. companies that participate, but will also serve as tangible evidence to other countries of U.S. metrology competence.
