AMS - The American Meteorological Society
The American Meteorological Society promotes the development and dissemination of information and education on the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences and the advancement of their professional applications. Founded in 1919, AMS has a membership of more than 14,000 professionals, students, and weather enthusiasts. AMS publishes nine atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic journals — in print and online — sponsors more than 12 conferences annually, and offers numerous programs and services.History of the AMS
The American Meteorological Society was founded in 1919 by Charles Franklin Brooks of the Blue Hill Observatory in Milton, Massachusetts. Its initial membership came primarily from the U.S. Signal Corps and U.S. Weather Bureau and numbered just less than 600. Its initial publication, the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, was meant to serve as a supplement to the Monthly Weather Review, which, at the time, was published by the U.S. Weather Bureau.

Membership includes over 7,000 scientists involved in research and development. Members come from academic, industrial and governmental laboratories. Their interests include advancement of techniques and instrumentation in mass spectrometry, as well as fundamental research in chemistry, geology, forensics, biological sciences and physics.ASMS sponsors the Annual Conference on Mass Spectrometry and Allied Topics that is attended by almost 6,000 scientists. Over 2,000 papers are presented as posters and talks. In addition to the Annual Conference, ASMS sponsors the following:
* Thirteen two-day Short Courses immediately preceding the annual conference.
* The Journal of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry, a peer reviewed monthly journal with a comprehensive range of research and development in mass spectrometry.
* The Fall Workshop explores emerging technology for those seeking to learn the topic or who are new to the field.
* The Asilomar Conference is highly focused on a specific research topic.
* The Sanibel Conference highlights specific topics of current interest.
* Publications include “Measuring Mass” a hardback published to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the annual conference, reprints of “Classic Books” that are no longer available but still of general interest to students and collectors.
* Research Awards presented to three young investigators annually.

NAPT - National Association for Proficiency Testing
NAPT is a non-profit membership association dedicated to the improvement of measurement quality. NAPT was officially founded in December of 1996 when it was clear there was a need for an association dedicated to effective proficiency testing because of newly implemented standards set by the metrology community for accreditation standards both nationally and internationally. Although there were many types of comparison programs being conducted across the world just a few allowed participation from the metrology community in an open format.Round robins have been ably conducted by organizations such as NIST and NCSL, but this function was not institutionalized until NAPT's formation.
NAPT is the first standing organization dedicated exclusively to providing ILC/PTs. NAPT fills a gap in the U.S. accreditation and verification infrastructure. NAPT will not only provide verification of lab proficiency for the U.S. companies that participate, but will also serve as tangible evidence to other countries of U.S. metrology competence.
