Virtual Centre for Industrial Process Tomography (VCIPT)

The primary aim of the VCIPT is to advance the field of industrial process tomography to best meet the long-term needs of its participants.

This new technology allows chemical process manufacturers, for example, to estimate the spatial distribution of phases and chemicals inside their processing vessels or pipelines. Striking augmented-reality 3-D images can be reconstructed from non-invasive peripheral sensing.

To deliver on this aim, the VCIPT integrates a wide range of research skills (including computing, electronics, mathematics, physics, process engineering and particle science).

These are interfaced with process users from sectors as diverse as food, minerals, pharmaceuticals and petrochemicals.

The Centre consists of a team of academics from Leeds University and The University of Manchester together with industrial member companies. It was initially established in 1996 with funding from the UK Government's Foresight Challenge Projects and industrial consortium members. Their website contains information about the VCIPT, the industrial consortium members and the various activities currently underway.

The VCIPT's operational objectives are to:

* manage pre-competitive research between academics and industry
* transfer technology to apply research
* ensure continuity of world-leading research in on-line sensors
* raise awareness of industrial process tomography potential
* maintain funding for a visible international presence and critical mass of expertise
* foster international linkages

AMS - The American Meteorological Society  Popular

The American Meteorological Society promotes the development and dissemination of information and education on the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences and the advancement of their professional applications. Founded in 1919, AMS has a membership of more than 14,000 professionals, students, and weather enthusiasts. AMS publishes nine atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic journals — in print and online — sponsors more than 12 conferences annually, and offers numerous programs and services.

History of the AMS

The American Meteorological Society was founded in 1919 by Charles Franklin Brooks of the Blue Hill Observatory in Milton, Massachusetts. Its initial membership came primarily from the U.S. Signal Corps and U.S. Weather Bureau and numbered just less than 600. Its initial publication, the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, was meant to serve as a supplement to the Monthly Weather Review, which, at the time, was published by the U.S. Weather Bureau.
