Biology and Biomedicine Science Gateway
Biological and biomedical research are in transition from "small science" (i.e., research conducted by individual investigators or laboratories) to large science involving interdisciplinary teams, large-scale instrumentation, distributed data archives and multilevel computational models. Hypothesis-driven biological science, the historical modus operandi, is now being complemented by data rich, discovery-driven science. Approaches range from large-scale genome sequencing to the micro-scale assaying of the metabolic state of a single cell.
Knowing which gene networks and genetic variants influence disease predisposition and progression in an organism will contribute significantly to our ability to develop effective clinical interventions. This shift to genomic medicine and intelligent hypothesis generation will lead to individual target treatments for many diseases.

Sony® Reader
Reading from the Sony® Reader is unlike reading from any other digital device you’ve ever seen. Its breakthrough electronic paper technology provides clarity and resolution that rival paper itself. The 6-inch screen1 is as easy to read in full daylight as indoors, and can be viewed from nearly any angle. Forgot your reading glasses? Enlarge text up to 200%. It’s the way on-screen reading was always meant to be – book-like.Measuring 6.9” by 4.9” by .5”, the Sony® Reader is smaller than many paperbacks. And at less than 9 ounces, it’s light enough to travel with you wherever you go. Its rechargeable battery powers you through up to 7,500 page turns, so you’re ready for the long haul, and can be recharged in as little as 4 hours with the AC adapter.
Books are just the beginning for the Sony® Reader. It also displays Adobe® PDFs, personal documents, blogs, newsfeeds, and JPEGs with the same amazing readability, so you can take your favorite blogs, web pages and online newspapers with you. It plays audio files, too.
The Sony® Reader holds up to 80 average-size books at a time, so you can switch from spec sheets to checkout procedures, schematics to plc code with the click of a button. And if 80 tomes aren’t enough, an optional MemoryStick® storage media or SD card gives you room for hundreds more. Now that’s food for thought! The Sony® Reader’s display uses e Ink® - a significant improvement over CRT and LCD technology. Instead of rows of glowing cells, e Ink® microcapsules actually appear as either black or white depending on a positive or negative charge determined by the content. The result is a reading experience that’s similar to paper - high contrast, high resolution, viewable in direct sunlight and at a nearly 180-degree angle, and requiring no power to maintain the image. In other words, it's a screen that, like you, is well read.

Measuring the Electronic Economy
E-Stats - the U.S. Census Bureau's new Internet site devoted exclusively to "Measuring the Electronic Economy." It features recent and upcoming releases, information on methods, classification systems, and background papers. E-commerce data were collected in five separate Census Bureau surveys. These surveys used different measures of economic activity such as shipments for manufacturing, sales for wholesale and retail trade, and revenues for service industries. Consequently, measures of total economic and e-commerce activity vary by economic sector, are conceptually and definitionally different, and therefore, are not additive. The Census Bureau’s e-commerce measures report the value of goods and services sold online whether over open networks such as the Internet, or over proprietary networks running systems such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).
