<title>Webinar: Is Ion Analysis bringing You Down?</title>
<link>http://measurementmedia.com/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1021</link>
<description>Aylesbury, UK -- Biosciences, Inc., a Magellan Biosciences company, has announced an archived version of its most recent Webinar entitled, 'Is Ion Analysis bringing You Down?' to enable chromatographers to gain insight into efficient and cost-effective strategies of ion analysis through HPLC methodologies.

The Webinar, which addresses the concerns that many chromatographers face with ion analysis, includes presentations and a Q&amp;A session featuring ESA scientist, Dr. Ian Acworth, and industry experts from Synomics Pharmaceutical Services and Johnson &amp; Johnson Pharmaceutical.

In today's drug development and manufacturing operations, one of the key analysis steps is the measurement of the amount and type of ion or counter ion present in a particular drug formulation. Currently, the analytical technique most commonly used to analyse ions is ion chromatography (IC). However, to perform these ion measurements with IC requires a specialist, expensive and dedicated single-use system. In addition, IC cannot readily measure anions and cations simultaneously.

<title>Analytical Tools to Address Pharmaceutical Contamination in U.S. Drinking Water</title>
<link>http://measurementmedia.com/index.php?name=News&amp;file=article&amp;sid=1020</link>
<description>Mass Spectrometry Water Monitoring Technology From Thermo Fisher Scientific
JOSE CA, USA – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today responded to national concerns surrounding the discovery of pharmaceutical compounds in U.S. drinking water by publicizing its mass spectrometry water monitoring technology currently in use in Canada and Europe.

The Associated Press (AP) recently reported that a variety of prescription and over-the-counter drugs have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans. The Thermo Scientific mass spectrometry systems rapidly identify and quantify these compounds, enabling municipalities to monitor the safety of their water supplies.

Recently the University of Montreal worked with Environment Canada to identify and quantify pharmaceutical residues present in the city’s waste and drinking water. To conduct this research, the University used a Thermo Scientific EQuan™ Environmental Quantitation system incorporating the TSQ Quantum™ mass spectrometer.

The system detected six common anti-infectives in the water, including Azithromycin, a potent antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections in the ear, throat or sinuses. The results from this study were published by the Journal of Environmental Monitoring in March 2007 (J. Environ. Monit., 2007, 9, 307–313).

<description>NEW APPLICATION NOTE FROM WYATT DEMONSTRATES THE ACCURATE AND PRECISE DETERMINATION OF MOLECULAR WEIGHT AND CONCENTRATION OF SODIUM HYALURONATE
SANTA BARBARA CA, USA - Wyatt Technology has published a new free-of-charge application note to demonstrate the use of SEC-MALS for the determination of molecular weight (MW) and concentration of Sodium Hyaluronate (HA, 1.6-2.9 MDa) in mobile phase solution and mixed with gelatine.

Wyatt's powerful SEC-MALS instruments were found to ascertain molecular weight and concentration of HA at very high mass recovery.

HA, a naturally-occurring biopolymer in all mammalian systems, is of huge commercial interest for medical, pharmacological, ophthalmic, and cosmetic applications. Using its Optilab rEX Differential Refractometer and DAWN® HELEOS, Wyatt has overcome consistent problems experienced using other techniques to accurately calculate HA's characteristics. HA has been studied considerably using methods such as size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) and single-capillary viscometry (SCV).
